A judge in Haiti has indicted several individuals, including Martine Moïse, Claude Joseph, and Léon Charles, in connection with the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.
The indictments are expected to further destabilize Haiti, already grappling with gang violence and political unrest.
“Henry … is weaponizing the Haitian justice system, prosecuting political opponents like me. It’s a classic coup d’état,” ex-prime minister Claude Joseph said. “They failed to kill me and Martine Moïse on July 7th 2021, now they are using the Haitian justice system to advance their Machiavellian agenda.”
“I won’t stop my fight. Justice must be served,” he said.
The report details various accusations against the individuals, including murder and criminal association.
The investigation reveals complex dynamics surrounding the assassination, including alleged involvement of multiple parties and security lapses at the presidential residence.
“What’s happening is that this crime is a conspiracy of great magnitudes in which powerful people are behind the scenes running everything, and that’s why they’re not given freedom,” Milena Carmona said.
