An American tourist, Troy Phillip Bohling, confessed to raping and murdering a fellow US hiker near a castle in Bavaria. He met the victims at Neuschwanstein Castle, and later assaulted them on a mountain trail.

Bohling pushed one victim down a ravine, raped and strangled the other, who later died from her injuries.

The surviving victim called for help and Bohling was arrested, now facing life in prison.

“His face was covered in deep red scratch marks and his neck as well,” Eric Abneri said of the arrest.

“There was clearly a struggle there, and he just had a frown on his face,” Abneri said.

“He didn’t say anything. He had a sort of disturbed look,” he said.

The incident was not planned, and Bohling expressed remorse. The trial is ongoing until March 13.
