Elon Musk announced that the first human patient with a Neuralink cybernetic implant has fully recovered and can control a computer mouse with their thoughts.
Neuralink is focused on maximizing button clicks from the patient.
“Progress is good, and the patient seems to have made a full recovery, with no ill effects that we are aware of. Patient is able to move a mouse around the screen by just thinking,” Musk said.
The company is conducting a clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of their brain-computer interface for paralyzed individuals.
“Initial results show promising neuron spike detection,” Musk wrote previously.
Musk envisions the technology helping people with disabilities communicate faster and aims to eventually treat conditions like obesity and schizophrenia.
“Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs,” Musk said. “Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal.”
Neuralink received FDA approval for human trials after addressing safety concerns.
