A dual Russian-American ballerina, Ksenia Karelina, was arrested on treason charges by the Federal Security Service in Russia.
She is accused of fundraising for a Ukrainian military cause and faces potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison. Karelina allegedly donated roughly $50 to Ukraine.
Karelina, a US citizen since 2021, was also charged with supporting the Kyiv regime while in the United States.
Her arrest is part of a series of detentions of Americans in Russia, including journalist Evan Gershkovich and others.
Putin has hinted at the possibility of exchanging detained Americans for Russian prisoners, such as the assassin Vadim Krasikov.
“I do not rule out that the person you refer to, Mr. Gershkovich, may return to his motherland. We want the US special services to think about how they can contribute to achieving the goals our special services are pursuing,” Putin said.
