A recent Monmouth University poll found that one in five Americans believe the unfounded conspiracy theory that pop star Taylor Swift is covertly working with the government to help Joe Biden win reelection.
Just under half of those surveyed had heard about the theory, while over half had not.
Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, noted the theory has traction among some Trump supporters, with even those unfamiliar with it finding it credible.
Murray said, “The supposed Taylor Swift PsyOp conspiracy has legs among a decent number of Trump supporters.”
“Even many who hadn’t heard about it before we polled them accept the idea as credible. Welcome to the 2024 election,” he continued.
The poll comes after former President Donald Trump asserted on his social media platform that Swift would not endorse Biden, claiming Trump was responsible for her success.
Trump wrote, “Joe Biden didn’t do anything for Taylor, and never will. There’s no way she could endorse Crooked Joe Biden, the worst and most corrupt President in the History of our Country, and be disloyal to the man who made her so much money.”
The survey highlights how conspiracy theories can spread and be believed, even without evidence, particularly among some partisan groups.
