Vice President Kamala Harris has faced criticism over her handling of issues like the border crisis and her influence on Capitol Hill.
A Los Angeles Times profile described how Harris frequently returns to California to “hide out” from scorn in Washington.
“In a city full of celebrities and A-listers, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff’s presence is hard to escape. For Harris, the temptation to abandon Washington, where she faces Republican derision and criticism within her party, for downtime at home has been tough to satisfy in recent years,” the profile read.
“While President Biden has a near-weekly habit of returning home to neighboring Delaware, a taxpayer-funded cross-country journey to Los Angeles is more difficult to justify unless it is for official business. Harris’ excursions back to Los Angeles are frequently disguised as an event to celebrate a local small business or a stop to raise awareness about one of her legislative priorities, such as black maternal healthcare or reproductive rights,” it added.
Meanwhile, White House officials are frustrated with media focus on Biden’s falling approval ratings in polls as the 2024 election approaches.
Though officials argue the economy is improving with inflation falling and unemployment near historic lows, 62% of consumers rely on their next paycheck just to cover expenses.
American households added $48 billion in credit card debt in Q3 2023, bringing the total to over $1.08 trillion.
Despite Biden touting his economic plans, voters say in polls his policies have forced them to work more hours or jobs to afford living costs.
Both Harris and Biden face challenges of criticism and doubts about the economy that could impact their prospects for 2024.
