The city of Boston shut down the Melnea A. Cass Recreational Community Center in the predominantly black Roxbury neighborhood to instead house illegal migrants, sparking outrage from local families.

The facility had previously hosted youth baseball teams and other community events.

Resident Jeremiah Rodriguez was upset to find his baseball practice canceled so the center could host rows of cots for migrants.

“It’s hard. I didn’t know the immigrants inside. It’s okay to help, I don’t think that’s the place to do it because kids and families go and enjoy,” father Yrbin Rodriguez said.

Black activist Clifton Braithwaite criticized the lack of funds for the local community but finding money to assist migrants, saying there needs to be a fair balance.

“We care about our immigrant brothers and sisters, but there has to be a fair balance. How can you tell people that was down at Mass Cass for over ten years, there was no money for them, and now you found money,” Braithwaite said.

The move deprived the lower-income black community of an important resource center.

Similar shutdowns of schools, parks and facilities to house migrants under Biden also provoked backlash in other Democrat-run cities like Chicago and New York.
