A mother in Alabama was barred from seeing her child after a punishment incident went wrong.

Sarai Rachel James made her son walk home as a punishment, resulting in the boy being injured when he tried to get back into the car.

“She may not have realized he was doing that,” Police Chief Michael Abercrombie said.

The boy sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

“God watched over him,” Abercombie said.

“It was a miracle he was not hurt worse than what he could have been,” he said.

James was charged with aggravated child abuse and forbidden from contacting her son.

Another passenger in the car was also charged.

The Department of Human Resources now has custody of the boy.
