Former national security adviser John Bolton suggested that Donald Trump may now be a target for America’s foreign adversaries due to the large sums of money he owes following recent civil court cases.
Trump was ordered to pay $355 million for fraud and $88 million for defamation.
Bolton acknowledged Trump will likely appeal but noted he may need to liquidate properties.
MSNBC’s Jen Psaki asked asked Bolton if he was “worried about Trump having all of this money he owes and being a target, in that way, of people like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and other foreign autocrats?”
Bolton replied that it was not “really a near-term problem” due to the appeals process.
When asked if this made Trump vulnerable to pressure from authoritarian leaders like Putin, Bolton agreed it demonstrated Trump’s unfitness for office, as he and his family are consumed by these legal and financial troubles.
Bolton said foreigners will try to take advantage of Trump’s situation and may already be doing so.
Bolton added, “I think this is one of the demonstrations why Trump really is not fit for office. He is consumed by these troubles, his family is consumed by them, and I think foreigners will try to take advantage of it one way or another. They may be doing it already.”
