The Department of Justice (DOJ) is giving $500,000 of forfeited Russian funds to Ukraine to aid in defending against the Kremlin’s invasion.
The funds, seized following the breakup of an illegal procurement network, will be transferred via Estonia due to current restrictions.
“This is an incremental step toward justice and restoration,” Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said. “But it is a necessary step. And it blazes a new trail towards combatting Russia’s ongoing brutality.”
This marks the first direct financial support from the U.S. to Ukraine and aims to assess and repair damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure.
The initiative is seen as a step towards justice and combating Russia’s actions, with the transfer being the second instance of such aid from the DOJ to Kyiv.
