Tennessee is advancing legislation to make it illegal for adults to help minors obtain abortions out of state without parental consent.
Similar “abortion trafficking” laws have been proposed in other red states since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Idaho passed the first law but it was blocked in court.
The Tennessee bill would criminalize transporting a minor within the state for an abortion, providing information on out-of-state clinics, or aiding their travel elsewhere.
Supporters argue it only targets in-state conduct, while opponents say it violates the right to travel between states.
“This bill is simply a parental rights bill,” Rep. Jason Zachary said.
If approved, violations would carry felony charges and fines.
While most states require parental involvement for minor abortions, exceptions exist for emergencies. Tennessee already bans abortion after cardiac activity is detected.
