A report indicates that an imam recited a verse from the Quran inside the Belgian parliament building last week that calls on Muslims to kill and take Jews captive.

The verse refers to Jews as the “People of the Book” and describes killing some and taking others captive.

While the event was not organized by parliament, a Socialist party MP and vice president of the Francophone Parliament was involved in inviting the imam.

Another MP criticized the organizer remaining in his position.

MP Theo Francken, critical of the organizer of the event, wrote, “This man invited that imam. He is deputy speaker of parliament. Can he stay that way?”

The Secretary of State of Brussels reportedly left during the incident.

Israel’s ambassador to Belgium Idit Rosenzweig expressed horror, noting the city has 18,000 Jews already experiencing increased antisemitism and fear.

Rosenzweig posted, “He could have chosen anything else, not a frightening symbolic message to anyone who knows the Quran, straight from the parliament podium… in Brussels’ parliament, a city with 18,000 Jews who are already experiencing increased antisemitism and fear.”

The recitation of such a verse from inside parliament was seen as sending a frightening symbolic message.
