Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced plans to build a new Forward Operating Base in the Del Rio sector to house up to 2,300 National Guard soldiers deployed along the border.

The base, located on acquired land in Eagle Pass, will include private rooms, dining facilities, recreation areas, laundry, WiFi and medical services to improve conditions over current “cramped quarters.”

Adjutant General of Texas Major General Thomas Suelzer said, “In the coming weeks, we will also be expanding operations north and south of Eagle Pass, putting up additional barriers to fortify our border.”

“We are also adding three more fan boats and expanding our drone program radar truck capabilities,” he continued.

Gov. Abbott said, he was “going to dramatically improve conditions for our soldiers” due to them currently being “scattered across this entire region in cramped quarters, away from fellow soldiers, and sometimes traveling long distances to do their job.”

The governor’s office wrote in a statement, “The multi-agency effort has led to over 500,000 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 39,500 criminal arrests, with more than 35,600 felony charges.”

“In the fight against the fentanyl crisis, Texas law enforcement has seized over 467 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission,” the statement continued.

It aims to better assist security efforts under Operation Lone Star, which has spent billions trying to secure the border since launching.

This includes over 500,000 immigrant apprehensions, nearly 40,000 criminal arrests and felony charges, and seizing enough fentanyl to be lethal over 467 million times.

The new base camp is meant to bolster Texas’ multi-agency border security operations through expanded infrastructure and housing for soldiers.
