A mass shooting occurred after the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade, leaving one person dead and 22 injured.
Two juveniles have been charged with crimes connected to the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl rally.
The gun fire occurred as a result of a dispute between several people.
The defendants are age 17. In serious crimes such as murder, juveniles as young as 12 can be certified for trial as adults.
Victims ranged from 8 to 47 years old, with over half under 16. The shooting appeared to stem from a dispute.
Multiple guns were recovered at the scene near Union Station as fans were leaving.
A DJ for local radio station KKFI was killed, leaving behind a husband and two young children.
It’s speculated that the incident is gang related, but police have released very few details. Authorities confirmed the violence is not terrorist related.
“The two juveniles are currently being held in custody while we work with juvenile prosecutors to review investigative findings and determine applicable charges,” police said in a statement. “The juvenile court system determines the custody status of all juvenile arrests.”
The two individuals are being detained in the county’s Juvenile Detention Center on gun-related and resisting arrest charges.
Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
Names of the accused are not released. No further information was released.
The station wrote in a statement, “This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”
Beto Lopez, the victim’s brother, said, “We woke up this morning excited and the last thing we ever expected was to have a tragedy in our family.”
The police chief praised law enforcement’s response and the efforts of those who helped victims.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves thanked those that “helped one another and even physically stopped a person who was believed to be involved in the incident.”
“I’m angered by what occurred … but I am also thankful for the response,” she continued.
So far in 2022 there have been at least 48 mass shootings in the US resulting in 81 deaths and 165 injuries.
