Major technology companies such as Meta, OpenAI, Google, and TikTok are joining forces to combat the malicious use of artificial intelligence in election interference.

The agreement aims to address the growing threat of AI disinformation campaigns, including deepfake media, that could manipulate voters and undermine election integrity.

While details of the agreement are undisclosed, critics question whether self-regulation alone will be effective in combating AI fakery.

Meta plans to detect and label AI-generated content on its platforms to prevent misinformation ahead of upcoming elections.

Meta spokesperson Lauren Dickerson said the companies are “working jointly toward progress on this shared objective”.

Meta President Nick Clegg added, “For those who are worried about video, audio content being designed to materially deceive the public on a matter of political importance in the run-up to the election, we’re going to be pretty vigilant. Do I think that there is a possibility that something may happen where, however quickly it’s detected or quickly labeled, nonetheless we’re somehow accused of having dropped the ball? Yeah, I think that is possible, if not likely.”

The exclusion of Twitter from the agreement raises concerns about its effectiveness, especially with significant national elections approaching in various countries.
