In a Pennsylvania state House special election, Democrat Jim Prokopiak narrowly defeated his Republican opponent to allow his party to retain a razor-thin majority.

Prokopiak’s victory in the suburban Philadelphia district keeps Democrats in control 102-100.

He supports raising the minimum wage, abortion access, and education spending.

“What I heard from voters is that Bucks County residents need help supporting their families, want control over their own bodies, and ensure they have the ability to chart their own paths in life. I’m committed to taking my conversations with voters to Harrisburg and making their dreams a reality,” Prokopiak said.

“No one can afford to live on the federal minimum wage in this area,” Prokopiak said. “If we’re going to be talking about good-paying jobs and creating life-sustaining jobs, the first thing we have to do is raise the minimum wage because it’s clear that is not sustaining anybody.”

His win was seen as a promising sign for Democrats in midterm races by the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which spent $50,000 on the race.

“This victory is a promising sign for Democrats up and down the ballot this year – it’s clear that momentum is on our side,” Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Heather Williams said.

A recent Wisconsin poll found voters there trust Donald Trump far more than Biden to handle the economy, with most believing the national economy is on the wrong track.

However, some note President Biden’s economic policies are hurting voters amid high inflation.

Control of the Pennsylvania legislature and other statehouses is a key focus of Democratic and Republican campaign committees ahead of the 2022 midterms.
