President Biden issued a memorandum providing temporary protected status for 18 months to most Palestinians currently in the US.
The order exempts those convicted of felonies or deemed a public safety risk.
It also excludes those who have voluntarily returned to Palestinian territories since the order or who have not continuously resided in the US since.
Biden directed agencies to allow employment authorization and consider suspending requirements for Palestinian F-1 students.
This comes after Democratic calls for protected status.
At the same time, Biden has taken actions seen as undermining Israel, including criticizing its operations against Hamas as excessive, signing an order targeting Israeli civilians, and denying open Jewish access to the Temple Mount.
The memorandum grants temporary safe haven to Palestinians while maintaining security-related exclusions.
