Threats against U.S. federal judges and prosecutors have more than doubled over the past three years, reflecting a rise in politically driven violence, particularly related to the country’s deep political divisions.
The spike coincides with highly politicized cases following the 2020 presidential election and has extended to those involved in cases against former President Donald Trump.
The U.S. Marshals Service is increasingly concerned about threats fueled by partisan divisions and social media vitriol.
“The threat environment right now that is causing me concern is when people disagree with the judicial process or the government, and that turns into those verbal attacks,” Marshals Director Ronald Davis said.
“And that is the beginning of the process that threatens the judiciary and threatens our democracy.”
The surge in threats is prompting growing worry about the impact on the judiciary and democracy.
This comes amid a sustained period of political violence, with at least 232 politically motivated acts of violence documented since the storming of the U.S. Capitol in 2021.
