US intelligence indicates Russia is developing a nuclear-armed weapon designed to destroy Western satellites from space.
This would knock out communications and military targeting systems.
House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner alerted members to this “serious national security threat” and wants more information declassified to discuss the response.
The Committee “has identified an urgent matter with regard to a destabilizing foreign military capability that should be known by all Congressional Policy Makers,” Turner said.
The weapon is meant to target satellites, not earth targets, and development is concerning according to sources.
“We are going to work together to address this matter, as we do all sensitive matters that are classified,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said. “But we just want to assure everyone steady hands are at the wheel.”
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan acknowledged it as a threat and said he scheduled a briefing for members, questioning why details were made public prematurely.
“I reached out earlier this week to the Gang of Eight to offer myself for up for a personal briefing to the Gang of Eight and, in fact, we scheduled a briefing for House members of the Gang of Eight tomorrow,” Sullivan said.
“That’s been on the books. So I am a bit surprised that Congressman Turner came out publicly today in advance of a meeting on the books for me to go sit with him alongside our intelligence and defense professionals tomorrow.”
Some criticize the administration for being slow to confront threats from China, Russia, Iran and within due to border and Afghanistan policies worsening security issues.
Overall the intelligence signals a destabilizing new space weapon is in development by Russia.
