Germany and Denmark participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new ammunition factory in northern Germany, emphasizing Europe’s efforts to increase weapons production amid Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The factory, being built by Rheinmetall, is expected to produce around 200,000 artillery shells annually and will primarily meet the needs of Germany’s military.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz highlighted the importance of increasing production to support Ukraine’s ammunition needs.
Scholz, said Rheinmetall was “laying the foundation for supplying the Bundeswehr and our partners in Europe with artillery ammunition independently and above all durably.”
“It is important that we do everything to increase production worldwide,” he continued.
Germany’s increased military spending and role as Ukraine’s second-largest military supplier were also noted.
