A news report undercuts Biden’s criticism of the special counsel investigation into his handling of classified documents.
The report said Biden did not remember the year of his son Beau’s death in 2015 when interviewed, though he got the month and day right.
“I can’t imagine someone would try to use our son’s death to score political points,” Jill Biden said.
Biden had criticized the investigator for raising Beau’s death. But sources said Biden himself brought up Beau during the interview.
Contrary to Biden’s claim, no one asked him when his son passed away. Pressure is mounting for release of the audio of Biden’s deposition.
The special counsel’s report found Biden willfully retained classified materials as a private citizen.
“The idea that somehow Joe Biden forgot the date of his son’s death is offensive and appalling,” Sen. Chris Coons said.
While no charges were recommended, the report said Biden’s memory issues would make conviction unlikely.
Allies used the mention of Beau against the investigation as it concluded amid Biden’s reelection campaign.
The GOP is demanding materials from the probe, including Biden’s interview transcript.
The special counsel may also testify before Congress on the matter.
