James Craig, a prominent Republican candidate in Michigan’s Senate election, has decided to withdraw from the race, citing fundraising challenges as a significant factor.
He is considering running for Detroit mayor instead.
Craig’s 2022 gubernatorial campaign was marred by a ballot petition scandal, and he expressed frustration over the Republican establishment’s support for his opponent, Mike Rogers.
With Craig’s exit, the Republican Senate race now involves Rogers, Peter Meijer, Sandy Pensler, and Nikki Snyder.
Sen. Steve Daines previously said Rogers was “the type of candidate who can perform well with suburban Michiganders and be a strong part of the eventual ticket in Michigan.”
The Senate seat is being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Debbi Stabenow, and Democrats aim to defend their control in a closely contested election.
Craig is contemplating a mayoral run in 2025, as Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, a Democrat, has been in office since 2014.
