In New York’s 3rd Congressional District, Democrats were able to flip the seat that was vacated after former Republican representative George Santos was expelled from Congress.
Santos had been found by the House Ethics Committee to have committed significant criminal wrongdoing including using campaign funds for personal expenses.
“As unofficially already no longer a member of Congress, I no longer have to answer a single question. That is the one thing that I’m going to take forever,” Santos said.

This led to his expulsion in a bipartisan 311-114 vote.
Democrats backed Tom Suozzi over Republican Mazi Pilip in the special election to fill the vacant seat.
“Chairman Guest feels that the evidence uncovered in the Committee’s investigation is more than sufficient to warrant punishment and that the most appropriate punishment is expulsion,” Rep. Michael Guest’s office stated.
Santos “knowingly caused his campaign committee to file false or incomplete reports with the Federal Election Commission; used campaign funds for personal purposes; engaged in fraudulent conduct in connection with RedStone Strategies LLC; and knew and willfully violated the Ethics in Government Act as it related to his Financial Disclosure (FD) Statements filed with the House,” the report noted.
“Likewise, in the same month, the campaign spent $1,400 at Virtual Skin Spa in Jericho, New York, a full-service medical spa based in Long Island that performs cosmetic procedures such as Botox, micro-needling, and facials,” the report added.
The race saw heavy spending and involvement as it was viewed as an important bellwether for the upcoming midterms.
Suozzi’s victory allowed Democrats to gain a seat in the House.
