Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced criticism after a super PAC supporting his campaign aired a Super Bowl ad resembling former President John F. Kennedy’s 1960 spot.
The ad, produced by American Values 2024, featured RFK Jr. and the words “vote independent,” using the same jingle and motif as the JFK ad.
The ad drew backlash on social media, with accusations of plagiarism and family members expressing disapproval.
Kennedy posted, “Our momentum is growing. It’s time for an Independent President to heal the divide in our country.”
Democrat Robert Shrum, the director of the University of Southern California’s Center for the Political Future, said, “This RFK Jr. Super Bowl ad is a straight out plagiarism of JFK ad from 1960.”
“What a fraud- and to quote [former Sen.] Lloyd Bentsen with a slight amendment, ‘Bobby, you’re no John Kennedy.’ Instead you are a Trump ally,” he continued on X.
Bobby Shriver wrote, “My cousin’s Super Bowl ad used our uncle’s faces- and my Mother’s. She would be appalled by his deadly health care views. Respect for science, vaccines, & health care equity were in her DNA. She strongly supported my health care work at @ONECampaign & @RED which he opposes.”
Following the ad, RFK Jr. apologized to his family, stating that the ad was created and aired without his campaign’s involvement.
RFK Jr. posted, “I’m so sorry if the Super Bowl advertisement caused anyone in my family pain.”
“The ad was created and aired by the American Values Super PAC without any involvement or approval from my campaign. FEC rules prohibit Super PACs from consulting with me or my staff. I love you all. God bless you,” he continued.
His candidacy has been met with opposition from family members, and the Democratic National Committee filed a complaint alleging collusion between his campaign and the super PAC.
RFK Jr. is currently on the ballot in just one state, Utah.
American Values co-founder Tony Lyons said, “The panicked DC power brokers are working overtime to keep Kennedy off the ballot because they know he can and will end their culture of greed and corruption. They offer us soaring inflation, forever wars, and chronic disease.”
