Instagram and Threads, owned by Meta, will no longer proactively recommend political content on their platforms, as announced by the company.
This change aims to provide a more positive user experience.
The alteration will affect various sections of Instagram, with the exception of content from accounts that users have chosen to follow.
Instagram wrote in a press release, “If you decide to follow accounts that post political content, we don’t want to get between you and their posts, but we also don’t want to proactively recommend political content from accounts you don’t follow.”
“We want Instagram and Threads to be a great experience for everyone,” the statement continued.
“We don’t proactively recommend content about politics on recommendation surfaces across Instagram and Threads,” explained the company.
“If you still want these posts recommended to you, you will have a control to see them,” they continued.
Instagram added, “If political content — potentially related to things like laws, elections, or social topics — is posted by an account that is not eligible to be recommended, that account’s content can still reach their followers in Feed and Stories.”
Professional accounts can check their eligibility for recommendation based on recent political content and take actions to regain eligibility if desired.
Users who still want to see political content on their recommendations will have the option to enable it using a control on their account.
The company also plans to roll out a similar control for Facebook at a later date.
This decision follows a previous announcement by the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, indicating that Threads would not “encourage” hard news and politics, emphasizing a desire for a “less angry” environment on the platform.
