House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has effectively halted the $95 billion foreign aid package passed by the Senate, signaling its likely demise.
Johnson emphasized the House’s focus on upcoming appropriations deadlines and expressed skepticism about bringing the bill to a vote. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell celebrated the Senate’s passage of the aid package, highlighting the value of American leadership.
Johnson said, “We’re dealing with the appropriations process. We have immediate deadlines upon us in that. That’s where the attention of the House is in this moment.”
Despite House Democrat leaders’ determination to use procedural tools to advance the bill, a discharge petition would require bipartisan support, which may be challenging given divisions within both parties.
McConnell’s prioritization of foreign aid over border security has drawn criticism, with some viewing his stance as out of touch with Republican priorities.
Sen. McConnell said, “History settles every account. And today, on the value of American leadership and strength, history will record that the Senate did not blink.”
Sen. Mitt Romney warned, “The vote we will soon take to provide military weapons for Ukraine is the most important vote we will ever take as United States senators.”
The aid package’s fate remains uncertain, with implications for government funding and broader political dynamics.
