Many Republicans are convinced that Democrats will replace Joe Biden as their presidential nominee, but there are several reasons why this is unlikely.
Despite Biden’s unpopularity and questions about his fitness for a second term, the Democrats are unlikely to make a switch due to the influence of Donald Trump, who effectively controls both parties.
“There is no mechanism. There is no smoke-filled room. If there is, I’ve never seen it, nor do I know anyone who has. This is going to play out in the way that it will,” Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt said.
Trump’s centrality and the Democrats’ determination to block his return insulate Biden within his own party.
It’s too late to make a switch, and the failure of a red wave in the midterms has bought Biden grace from party members.
“I was of the opinion we’d come to our senses,” James Carville said. “We never did. So here we are.”
Furthermore, Democrats have become a more hierarchical, top-down party, frowning upon insurgencies.
This makes it unlikely for Biden to be replaced.
