Actress and activist Alyssa Milano faced criticism for attending Super Bowl LVIII after previously setting up a GoFundMe to fund her son’s baseball team trip to Cooperstown.
Milano shared a picture on Instagram showing her and her son at the game, prompting comments highlighting the expensive nature of Super Bowl tickets and questioning her need for donations given her ability to afford such an event.
“My buddy. #mothersonlove #mothersonbond #superbowl,” Milano wrote in the caption of her post.
Previously, Milano had received backlash for creating a GoFundMe page to support her son’s baseball team trip, with many finding it tone-deaf for a celebrity to seek donations while being able to afford high-profile events like the Super Bowl.
“My good friend [Alyssa Milano] could afford Super Bowl tickets which cost an average of $10k each, but needed (much poorer) people on Twitter to pay for her son’s team’s Cooperstown, NY little league trip. Tony Danza would never,” OutKick’s Clay Travis wrote.
“So you have money to take your kid to the Super Bowl but want other people to donate to your son’s baseball team?” another commenter said.
“Let’s be real for a second. How can a celebrity start a gofundme for her son and say that she couldn’t afford it but then pull up to the super bowl? Please explain? I’m sure I’m not the only one that would love to hear YOUR answer, let alone hers?” another wrote.
“My son’s baseball team is raising money for their Cooperstown trip. Any amount would be so greatly appreciated. You can read more about the team and make a donation here,” Milano wrote on X.
Milano defended her actions, stating that fundraising for children’s sports teams is common and acknowledging her financial limitations.
“Every parent raises money for their child’s sports teams and many of them do so through GoFundMe. I am no different,” she later wrote.
“As much as I’d love to pay for the entire team and their families for travel, transportation, hotel, food and beverage, uniforms, trading pins and all the things teams do for this kind of trip — I can not afford to do so,” she said. “Maybe someday.”
