Mason Herring, a 39-year-old Houston attorney, has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and ten years on probation for slipping abortion drugs into his wife’s drinks.
Initially charged with felony assault to induce abortion, he pleaded guilty to injury to a child and assault of a pregnant person.
His wife, Catherine Herring, expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, highlighting the impact on their premature-born daughter who has developmental delays.
“I do not believe that 180 days is justice for attempting to kill your child seven separate times,” Catherine Herring said.
Catherine filed for divorce and reported that Mason expressed negative feelings about the pregnancy and later began offering her drinks containing misoprostol.
Mason “had a negative reaction and after that evening, he sent her text messages expressing that he was not happy about the pregnancy and did not know what to do,” the complaint stated.
Catherine provided videos from hidden cameras as evidence.
“Catherine Herring told authorities her husband in March 2022 began lecturing her on hydration and offering water. She said she became severely ill after drinking from the first cup that appeared cloudy, which her husband explained was perhaps the result of the cup or water pipes being dirty,” the report read.
Mason’s attorney described the plea deal and sentence as reasonable, emphasizing Mason’s acceptance of responsibility.
“It’s a sad situation and Mason has accepted his responsibility,” attorney Dan Codgell said.
