Virginia’s House and Senate passed an “assault weapons” ban, which is now headed to Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s desk.

The legislation targets specific firearms and shotguns, with Republicans arguing that most crimes are committed with illegal handguns rather than so-called “assault guns.”

“Most of these crimes are being committed by handguns illegally, not what you guys call assault guns, which is by the way a misnomer. It’s a semi-automatic rifle,” Sen. John McGuire said.

“I suppose if I hit you in the head with a hammer you would call it an assault hammer.”

Senate Democrats passed a bill expanding gun-free zones for concealed carry permit holders.
