A Palestinian migrant was charged with assault and robbery as a hate crime for allegedly stealing an Israeli flag from a Long Island man’s porch and attacking him.
The victim recounted the assailant’s anti-Semitic remarks and the subsequent physical altercation.
“When I grabbed the flag away from him, he was saying ‘I’m from Palestine, you Jews are killing Palestinians,’” Aleksandr Binyaminov said.
“He punched me in the face gave me black and blue put me in a choke hold and he headbutted me, that’s how I got a black eye,” Binyaminov said.
The incident, described as a hate crime, prompted local officials to condemn the attack and call for an end to such violence.
“The subject continued to swing wildly and struggle with the victim and threw the victim to the ground,” Nassau County Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Smith said.
“Living in America, I never thought this would happen to me. As a Jew, we live here happily. Feels a little bit disgusting that this happened to us, these hate crimes should be stopped,” Binyaminov said.
The accused was held on bail, and it was reported that he entered the U.S. from Mexico in November, with uncertainty about his specific country of origin.
