Valentina Gomez, a Republican candidate for Missouri Secretary of State, posted a video in which she burned books she deemed as “grooming, indoctrinating, and sexualizing” children.

The video received over 1 million views and sparked controversy.

“When I’m Secretary of State, I will BURN all books that are grooming, indoctrinating, and sexualizing our children. MAGA. America First,” Gomez said.

“This is what I will do to grooming books when I become secretary of state.”

“These books come from a Missouri Public Library. When I am in office, they will burn,” she said.

The action is part of a broader trend in some states, including Missouri, to challenge or remove books considered inappropriate for children from school libraries.

The video resembled a similar one by Missouri state senator Bill Eigel, who also used a flamethrower in a campaign stunt.

This reflects a larger push in over 40 states since January 2021 to introduce bills restricting discussions of critical race theory, racism, and sexism in classrooms.
