Television chef Duff Goldman shared a harrowing experience after being involved in a severe car accident caused by a drunk driver.
Despite suffering a hand injury, he expressed gratitude for his life and urged people to avoid drunk driving.
“After doing a systems check and finding that my only injury was to my hand, I thanked my lucky stars that I’d still be there to celebrate her third birthday, even if I couldn’t make her cake,” Goldman wrote online. “I’m fine, but it’s gonna be a long road to recovery, and for someone like me who makes a living with my hands, you can imagine that this is no joke.”
Goldman emphasized the dangers of driving under the influence and encouraged the use of alternatives like Uber or taxis.
“There’s no excuse for driving drunk. None. Uber, taxi, call a friend. No excuse. Stay safe friends, count your blessings. If you’re drinking don’t drive, and if you’re driving, don’t drink,” he said.
“I live on a really windy, canyon road in the Santa Monica Mountains, and this guy just came around this corner way too fast,” Goldman said. “He was already totally in our lane and just smashed into us.”
“I saw the whole thing happen… I just saw my wife and my daughter. It was nuts,” he said. “And then boom, the crash happened. I was just doing a systems check, making sure everything was where it was supposed to be, and I see there’s blood all the way down my hand, but nothing else.”
“I was just like, ‘Thank God, thank God.’ Even as I was sitting there dealing with it, I was like, ‘I’m still here.’”
“It definitely doesn’t work,” Goldman stated regarding his hand. “And I need it to, because that’s all I got.”
“He got out of the car and was kind of stumbling around. I was like, ‘Oh, this guy is hurt.’ And then I went over to see if he was all right and hold him upright. And I smelled his breath, and I was like …,” Goldman said before his voice trailed. “Man, I was pretty angry.”
He also highlighted the importance of family and has been recuperating at home with their support.
“My daughter almost didn’t have a dad because this guy was stupid,” Goldman said. “There’s so many ways to get to where you need to go at the touch of a button, you can get a ride to anywhere you need to go. There’s just no excuse.”
“I just hope that people stop and think and just be like, ‘You know what? What’s the big deal? Take an Uber, and then in the morning I got to take an Uber back to where my car is.’ It’s not a big deal,” he said.
