U.S. intelligence officials were warned about the increasing threat of Iranian-made weapons penetrating American defenses in the Middle East months before a deadly drone strike at an outpost in Jordan.

Concerns were raised about potential attacks on U.S. personnel in Jordan by Iran-backed groups, and the vulnerability of American troops and diplomats in the region following the Gaza invasion.

The warnings grew more urgent as Iran-backed militias stepped up attacks in October and November.

The outpost where three service members were killed had faced a previous drone threat, and questions have been raised about the adequacy of defense measures.

“In theory, [Department of Defense] has had a few months to rectify the lack of defense, and it didn’t,” senior fellow and director of the Syria and Countering Terrorism & Extremism programs at the Middle East Institute Charles Lister said.

“There is a precedent for an attack on the facility. And that should have rung alarm bells, that it was insufficiently defended,” he said.

The U.S. has debated how to defend against Iranian drones, and steps were taken to reinforce defenses at the outpost after Israel’s invasion.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin “has no higher priority than protecting our forces and taking care of our people,” Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said.

“We continue to take necessary steps to safeguard our forces who serve in harm’s way, and continuously reevaluate our force protection measures,” Singh said.

However, the outpost lacked a “kinetic” counter-drone capability and relied on electronic warfare capabilities.

Since October, there have been over 160 Iran-backed attacks on U.S. troops in Syria, Iraq, and Jordan, resulting in casualties.
