Former President Donald Trump is urging the Supreme Court to maintain his name on Colorado’s ballot, claiming his challengers are pursuing an “anti-democratic” legal case against him.
The court will hear arguments regarding Trump’s eligibility due to his involvement in the events leading to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
“He is the presumptive Republican nominee and the leading candidate for President of the United States,” Trump’s attorneys stated.
“The American people – not courts or election officials – should choose the next President of the United States.”
Trump faces various legal entanglements as he campaigns for another term, including a trial in an election subversion case.
“Yet at a time when the United States is threatening sanctions against the socialist dictatorship in Venezuela for excluding the leading opposition candidate for president from the ballot,” Trump’s team said.
The case revolves around interpreting Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits certain officials from holding office if they have “engaged in insurrection.”
Trump argues that this section doesn’t apply to presidents and that Congress must pass a law before it can be enforced.
