House Speaker Mike Johnson faced criticism and potential challenges to his leadership after the House failed to pass a resolution to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and a bill for Israel-only aid.
Some Republicans condemned the leadership’s strategy and suggested vacating the speakership if further votes failed.
“I would have thought they would have known that. I would have thought that would have been basic,” Rep. Ralph Norman said.
“They’re good on the other side of knowing that. Is it that hard?”
“If we lose the Israel vote after losing Mayorkas impeachment: VACATE,” one GOP aide stated.
Johnson’s inability to unite the GOP and secure votes has led to scrutiny from hard-right lawmakers.
This comes after an unsuccessful vote on the Israel aid bill and the rejection of impeachment articles against Mayorkas, with some Republicans crossing party lines.
