A 26-year-old Palestinian migrant in New York faces hate crime charges after allegedly stealing U.S. and Israeli flags from a homeowner’s yard and assaulting the man with antisemitic slurs.
The suspect, Bechir Lehbeib, entered the U.S. from Mexico and claimed asylum.
Video evidence shows him taking the flags and engaging in violence when confronted by the homeowner.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said, “These are not the type of people who come to America like my great-grandparents did, like your great-grandparents and grandparents and parents who came to America to kiss the ground.”
“Instead, they spit on our flag, they trample on our values and they commit crimes. And they do so at taxpayer expense,” he continued.
“The Nassau County Police Department and District Attorney Donnelly have a unique approach for the metropolitan area,” explained Blakeman.
“We make the arrest, we bring the charges and we demand justice against foreign invaders who have no respect for America and religious freedom,” he concluded.
Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Smith said, “When he approached and confronted the subject, he was met with an overhead right cross to his head.”
“The subject continued to swing wildly and struggle with the victim, and at one point threw the victim to the ground,” he continued.
He made biased statements and threatened further violence against those displaying Israeli flags.
Lehbeib faces felony charges and has been ordered to surrender his passport and stay away from the victim.
The incident has prompted concerns about migrant-related crime in the area.
