California Governor Gavin Newsom has deployed over 100 California Highway Patrol officers to Oakland and the surrounding area to address a surge in crime.
The operation aims to crack down on criminal activity, including vehicle theft, retail theft, and violent crime.
Gov. Newsom wrote in a statement, “As crime rates across California decrease — including right across the Bay in San Francisco — Oakland is seeing the opposite trend.”
“What’s happening in this beautiful city and surrounding area is alarming and unacceptable. I’m sending the California Highway Patrol to assist local efforts to restore a sense of safety that the hardworking people of Oakland and the East Bay demand and deserve,” the statement continued.
This effort represents a 900% increase in state law enforcement personnel in the area.
Crime rates in Oakland have risen significantly, prompting the closure of businesses and warnings for employees to stay inside buildings for safety.
Businesses have also provided security guards to protect employees.
