A Meredith College poll in North Carolina indicates that in a hypothetical general election matchup, former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden by five points, with 44 percent of registered voters backing Trump and 39 percent supporting Biden.

Trump holds a significant lead over potential Republican primary opponent Nikki Haley, with 72 percent of respondents planning to vote in the primary supporting Trump compared to Haley’s 20 percent.

Meredith Poll Director David McLennan said, “Trump’s lead in North Carolina seems very consistent since the last administration of the Meredith Poll. Even with Republicans dropping out of the race, there seems to be no momentum for Nikki Haley in the state.”

The poll also provides insights into the gubernatorial primaries, showing Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson leading the Republican primary and Attorney General Josh Stein leading the Democratic primary.

In a hypothetical general election matchup between Robinson and Stein, Stein leads by a narrow margin.

The poll was conducted between January 26-31, 2024, with a credibility interval of ± 3.5 percentage points for the full sample.
