An Iranian-backed drone attack that killed three U.S. soldiers and injured dozens in Jordan likely went undetected due to its low flight path, as the outpost lacked air defense systems capable of intercepting it.
Initial reports suggesting mistaken identity with an American drone have been contrasted by a military assessment.
U.S. Central Command’s investigation is ongoing, and the base’s defensive posture has been altered following the attack.
Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said, “We’re still assessing exactly what happened in that attack.”
“And, of course, CENTCOM and [Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin] will determine if there’s any change or needs to be any change to our defensive posture at Tower 22 or any other base in the region. But I just don’t have more for you on that specific attack,” she continued.
The incident marks the first American deaths from hostile fire amid escalating tensions with Iranian-backed groups in the region.
