Mexican President Lopez Obrador is set to meet with U.S. President Biden’s homeland security adviser to discuss migration and border security.
The Biden administration is pushing for a $118 billion bill to overhaul migration policy and provide funding for border security, which Lopez Obrador believes is electorally motivated.
“The president spoke to me to tell me about issues that have to do with negotiations on migration, and he wanted me to meet with his adviser on security matters,” Obrador said.
“We think this policy is not going to work,” Obrador said. “Apparently the Republicans are conditioning the vote on there being anti-Mexican migration measures (included in the bill).”
“They want to use us as a bargaining chip.”
Obrador is calling for measures to regularize Mexican workers in the U.S. and end sanctions on Venezuela and Cuba.
