The Biden administration has appointed Elizabeth Kelly, a top White House aide, to lead the newly established AI Safety Institute at the National Institute for Standards and Technology, part of the Commerce Department.
Kelly, who played a key role in drafting the executive order that established the institute, will oversee the development of “red team” testing standards for major AI developers, aiming to ensure the safety of AI systems for consumers and businesses.
Lael Brainard, director of the White House National Economic Council, claimed that Kelly “shaped the president’s agenda on tech and financial regulation and worked to build broad coalitions of stakeholders.”
The institute’s work is seen as crucial for building trust and facilitating wider adoption of AI, addressing the current lack of universal testing standards for AI systems.
