Nikki Haley, a contender for the Republican presidential nomination, has requested Secret Service protection due to an increase in threats during her campaign.
She confirmed the request after heightened security was noticed at her campaign events.
Despite the challenges, Haley remains committed to her campaign, stating that dealing with threats is part of public life.
“We’ve had multiple issues,” Haley said. “It’s not going to stop me from doing what I need to do.”
She has been targeted in “swatting” attempts and faced security incidents at events.
“Part of running for public life is that you’re going to deal with the threats that are there. That’s not going to deter me,” Haley said. “Does it mean we have to put a few more bodies around us? Yes, that’s fine.”
While such protection is typically granted closer to the general election, exceptions have been made in the past.
Another candidate, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has also requested Secret Service protection, but it has not been granted.
