The city of Aurora has agreed to pay a $1.9 million settlement to a Black family after police officers drew their guns on a woman and four minors, mistaking their car for a stolen vehicle.
The incident, which went viral, led to the family being handcuffed and lying on the ground.
The police later realized their mistake, attributing it to a mix-up with the vehicle’s out-of-state license plate.
“All parties are very satisfied with this settlement,” attorney David Lane said.
The family’s lawyer claimed the officers’ actions were evidence of racism.
“The Aurora Police Department remains committed to strengthening the relationship with the community through accountability and continuously improving how it serves the public,” the city stated.
“Mentally, it destroyed me because I felt like not only am I not safe, these kids aren’t safe,” one family member said.
The settlement will be evenly divided among the family, and the girls’ portions will be placed into annuities.
This incident follows a previous $15 million settlement with the parents of Elijah McClain, who was killed by police in 2019.
