The New York Times published a report featuring the experiences of teenagers pushed into irreversible surgeries and body-altering hormones.
One individual, Grace Powell, shared her journey from feeling uncomfortable in her own skin to undergoing transgender procedures without thorough evaluation or addressing underlying issues like depression and trauma.
The report highlighted the shift in the demographic seeking transgender treatments, with a growing number of children without a history of gender dysphoria.

“I wish there had been more open conversations,” Powell said. “But I was told there is one cure and one thing to do if this is your problem, and this will help you.”
“What should be a medical and psychological issue has been morphed into a political one,” she added. “It’s a mess.”
Clinicians noted this change and expressed concerns about the lack of professional oversight.
“The population has changed drastically,” psychologist Laura Edwards-Leeper said. “As far as I can tell, there are no professional organizations who are stepping in to regulate what’s going on.”
The piece also addressed the issue of detransitioners, individuals who feel abandoned after changing their minds, and the pressure on parents to choose transitioning for their children or face the risk of suicide.
“I was always a liberal Democrat. Now I feel politically homeless,” the mother of a detranisitioner said.
“In front of my son, the therapist said, ‘Do you want a dead son or a live daughter?’” one mother said.
The report questioned the reliability of studies linking transgender medical procedures to lower suicide risk.
