The town of Littleton, New Hampshire, has experienced a cultural shift with increased tourism and a growing younger and more diverse population.
However, the town has been embroiled in controversy over LGBTQ-themed art and expression, leading to the resignation of the town manager and tensions within the community.
The conflict arose after selectboard member Carrie Gendreau made derogatory comments about gay people and expressed opposition to certain art installations.
“What went up was not good,” Gendreau said. “I don’t want that to be in our town. I don’t want it to be here.”
“She speaks for those stakeholders who are afraid to speak out due to personal retribution. She speaks out for those who are afraid for their own personal safety,” Nick De Mayo said.
“It’s coming from a very small group of people. Unfortunately, that small group of people hold elected office and have some degree of power within the town,” physician Kevin Silva said.
The situation sparked debates over inclusion, tolerance, and artistic expression, with significant public engagement and differing viewpoints within the town.
“There’s a lot of undertones that need to get corrected,” Gendreau said.
The controversy has shed light on the town’s evolving cultural dynamics and the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality.
