Meta’s Oversight Board has ruled that a manipulated video suggesting President Joe Biden is a pedophile does not violate Facebook’s current rules, criticizing the rules as “incoherent” and too narrowly focused on AI-generated content.

The board recommended an update to cover both audio and video content, regardless of AI use, and the application of labels identifying manipulated content.

However, they cautioned against extending the policy to photographs. Meta, planning to update the policy in response to evolving AI, is reviewing the ruling and will respond publicly within 60 days.

The board also highlighted the prevalence of non-AI altered content and suggested that enforcement should involve labeling rather than removal.
