Tracy’s song “Fast Car” has finally received recognition, with a Black artist winning songwriter of the year at the Country Music Association awards.
Despite some frustration, the moment is seen as significant and well-deserved.
The song also has personal significance for some, with references to a comedic sketch on “In Living Color.”
Combs has repeatedly opened up about the success of the song and his appreciation for Chapman.
“Oh man, ‘Fast Car’ has surprised me more than you can imagine. Tracy Chapman wrote this perfect song that that I first heard with my dad and it has stayed with me since,” Combs said.
