Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz is urging fellow lawmakers to back a resolution declaring that Donald Trump was not involved in the January 6 Capitol insurrection, aiming to exonerate him.

The resolution has gained initial support from 27 co-sponsors and seeks more Republican backing.

Gaetz’s email to other Republican offices emphasized the resolution’s importance, but not all Republicans are likely to endorse it.

Trump “did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or give aid or comfort to the enemies thereof,” the resolution stated.

“You are receiving this email because your boss endorsed President Trump, and we would love to have your support as an original cosponsor before we send the resolution and the list of sponsors to the former President,” an email from Gaetz’s team read.

“This resolution is a no-brainer – controversial only to the most extreme of the far-left – and a statement of fact that every single Republican can be expected to support,” it said.

“If the left has the courage to interfere in our elections and weaponize the judicial system against our brethren, we must have the courage to express what is self-evident.”

Gaetz’s unwavering support for Trump has been evident, and the resolution could prompt Republicans to declare their allegiance to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
