CNN is undergoing a significant morning lineup overhaul, marking the end of “CNN This Morning” and reassigning key personnel to new roles.
The move, led by CEO Mark Thompson, aims to revitalize viewership in a fiercely competitive news landscape.
The revamp includes the discontinuation of “CNN This Morning,” with anchors transitioning to new roles, and a reshuffling of the morning programming.
“We need to recapture some of the swagger and innovation of the early CNN,” Thompson said.
“It’s time for a new revolution.”
There are plans to consolidate news operations and explore new revenue streams, potentially through subscription models, to adapt to evolving media consumption habits.
“Change is essential if we’re to secure this great news company’s future. It brings uncertainty – that I’m afraid is inevitable – but in my experience, it’s also often rich in personal and shared opportunity,” he said. “Let’s build with confidence. Let’s fulfill our mission. Let’s learn some new tricks. Let’s look after each other. Let’s have some fun.”
Thompson emphasized the need for innovation and agility to secure CNN’s future, acknowledging the network’s strengths while highlighting the necessity for more risk-taking and innovation.
“The CNN of today is no longer that buccaneering outsider but a tenured incumbent,” he said. “But, despite all these strengths, there’s currently too little innovation and risk-taking.”
